Learn the warning signs of a scam roofer (or at the very least, somebody who is undependable!).

No Local Address

Anybody can pay for ads and a professional-looking business front. You need to look past the pretty signs and slick promises for the true story. For one, do they have a local address? PO boxes don’t count as a local address. They need to have an actual operating business front that can be verified. Many fly-by-night roofing companies won’t have a local address, as well as other documentation.

Documentation

Speaking of documentation, the company you hire must have proof of state licensing, insurance, bonds, and workman’s comp. Don’t let anybody smooth talk you into believing these documents aren’t important. And don’t sign anything without seeing them in person, no matter how far the contractor goes to claim they have these. You can check for some of this information online, but any roofer worth his or her salt will be able to produce them.

They Demand Money Up Front

One hallmark of a scam artist is that they ask for a cash payment up front before any work begins. They will claim that this money is to buy materials, and after they get your cash, you’ll likely never hear from them again. Reputable roofing companies don’t need cash up front for materials. Make sure you get a contract that thoroughly discusses payment dates and deadlines. Never, ever pay in cash. Always use a debit or credit card, where the money can be tracked.

They Knocked on Your Door

We won’t ever begrudge somebody who works hard and who goes the extra mile. However, contractors who knock on doors to solicit business are usually not well established. Many times, after a big storm, you will see quite a few of these operations sweep through town. While some might be newer operations trying to get their name out there, other times, they can’t be trusted. Do your homework and make sure that they have all of the above requirements before signing on!

If It Doesn’t Feel Right…

Trust your instincts. If you feel like something isn’t right, chances are, it probably isn’t. When you find yourself second-guessing, go through all of the steps above, and take it a step further by doing online research. Read reviews and testimonials for all roofing companies you are considering, and don’t be timid about asking your potential roofer about any concerns.
