Here’s how to deal with a leaking roof.

Stay Off the Roof!

Many people think they’ll just shimmy up a ladder and inspect the top of the roof themselves. Don’t make this mistake. If you were hit by a storm, there might be parts of the roof that are compromised, and you won’t know what to look for. The surface might also be slick. These conditions are a recipe for disaster and could cause serious injury or even death. The professionals at Legacy Roof are trained to traverse roofs safely. Let us handle the inspection for you.

Look for the Source

From inside the house, you might be able to pinpoint the source of the leak. If you’re able to get up to your attic safely, locate where the water is pooling and place a bucket underneath to catch the water. This will prevent it from doing further damage to the rest of the home (leaking through heat registers, lighting fixtures, etc.).

Stop the Leak

This is going to sound a bit nuts, but bear with us here. Once you find the source of the leak, get a screwdriver. Now look for the center of the leak where the water is collecting the most, and poke a hole through it (we told you this would sound a bit nuts). The logic behind this is that instead of letting the water accumulate in a large area, you’re controlling the leak to one small area where it can flow easily. This will relieve the pressure on the rest of the structure, reducing your risk of the entire ceiling collapsing.

Place a Tarp

Place a tarp under the bucket to catch any water that trickles in elsewhere. While you have controlled the flow to one area, it is still possible that water will trickle through other spots on the roof. Further, if your bucket fills while you’re not around, you’re creating a second line of defense.

Call a Professional

Roofs aren’t DIY fixes. If you have a leak, simply repairing the point where water is coming through isn’t likely going to be the scope of the repairs. A trained roofer will know what to look for, what to fix and replace, and how to prevent it from happening again. We are also licensed, bonded, and insured. Our employees have workers compensation in case of an unlikely injury. Put your trust in the pros, who will have taken care of every possibility, giving you peace of mind.
